Matti Niinikoski of Turku School of Economics receives the Finnish Business School Graduates’ 2026 Teaching Award
Matti Niinikoski of Turku School of Economics at the University of Turku has been awarded the 2026 Teaching Award by the Finnish Business School Graduates (Suomen Ekonomit). The award recognises in particular his skilful and motivating teaching of first-year students.
Each year, the Teaching Award seeks a teacher in the field of business and economics who has made a significant contribution to the quality of teaching. This year, the award placed particular emphasis on the importance of foundational teaching and on helping students make a smooth transition to university studies.
The award jury especially commended Niinikoski for the way he has developed an introductory course by integrating another course into it. Students had previously found that course challenging, and completing it had slowed their progress in their studies.
“Foundational courses lay the groundwork for later studies. It’s important that the content is clear and that students stay engaged. Short video lectures have proven to be an effective teaching method for this,” Niinikoski says.
Among the aspects of Niinikoski’s teaching that students value are the weekly exercises and the thorough way they are reviewed. The lectures have also been designed so that students can return to them later in their studies. Students have been especially appreciative of the written feedback they receive on their exams.
“In recent years, our teachers have received several national awards. This reflects the success of our investment in foundational teaching as well, which builds the basis for learning and expertise. Matti Niinikoski could not be a more deserving recipient of this recognition, and we are very proud of him,” says Markus Granlund, Dean of Turku School of Economics.

The Finnish Business School Graduates’ Teaching Award is worth €6,000 and supports the development of teaching in the field of business and economics. Niinikoski was nominated for the award by the Turku School of Economics student association, Turun kauppatieteiden ylioppilaat ry, which receives €1,000 for the winning nomination. The award jury consisted of members of the Finnish Business School Graduates’ Education Policy Committee and student representatives.
