Accounting at Turku School of Economics

The purpose of this website is to provide information on accounting research and teaching at the Turku School of Economics. This information is intended for current and prospective students, fellow academics, and other stakeholders interested in the field of accounting. 

Accounting remains a cornerstone of business education at the Turku School of Economics, with a significant number of bachelor’s and master’s level students choosing it as their major each year. Our faculty expertise spans a wide range of accounting disciplines, allowing us to offer a diverse curriculum that bridges theoretical depth with practical relevance in a rapidly changing global economy.

In addition to teaching, our faculty actively engage in international research communities and contribute to leading academic journals through publishing and reviewing. Through these activities, we participate in ongoing academic and professional discussions on accounting, governance, and organizational decision-making.

Studying Accounting

Accounting graduates from the Turku School of Economics enjoy excellent career prospects and are highly sought after for demanding expert roles. Our alumni typically work as auditors, management accountants, financial controllers, and business consultants within both international corporations and public sector organizations. Our studies equip students with strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret financial and non-financial information to support decision-making.

Doctoral Studies in Accounting

Our doctoral researchers (PhD students) major in Accounting and Finance, with a specific focus on Accounting. Applications are typically accepted twice a year, in the Spring (March) and Fall (September). Funding is highly competitive and can be applied for during the Fall period; it is awarded to the most promising applicants for up to four years following a rigorous review process. Accounting Research

Research in Accounting at the Turku School of Economics covers a broad spectrum, including management accounting, financial accounting, auditing, and corporate governance. Our research addresses contemporary questions related to how organizations measure and manage performance, ensure reporting and accountability, and support decision-making in complex and changing economic environments.

Memberships

Our faculty engage in major international research communities, such as the American Accounting Association and the European Accounting Association, and contribute to the academic field through publishing and reviewing in leading journals.

We are members of the Graduate School of Accounting. GSA is a joint initiative of Finland’s leading universities to promote high-quality doctoral education in accounting by offering advanced-level courses, seminars, and workshops. Via GSF, we are also members of several organizations that offer international courses. 

Turku School of Economics is a member of the Finnish Doctoral Program in Business Studies, KATAJA. Through these networks, we are connected to national and international academic communities and actively participate in research collaboration and scholarly exchange.
